Dear Parents/Guardians: Welcome to the 2008-2009 academic year. My name is Beverly Martin. It is my pleasure to be your child's first grade teacher. I am looking forward to working with you in providing positive educational experiences for your child. This year promises to be filled with lots of new and exciting learning experiences. Your first grader will be exploring concepts in Math, Science, Social Studies, Spanish, English Language Arts and Cultural Studies. I would like to encourage you to be actively involved in your child's work. Your child should read at least 20 minutes every day. In order to extend your child’s comprehension skills, it is also important that you have discussions about a story or reading article shortly after it has been read. Also, I would encourage you to send your son/daughter prepared for class every day. He/she must bring to the classroom at least three (3) sharpened pencils and a clean eraser daily. Unless students are told otherwise, homework will be given every night. A parent or guardian must sign all assignments, homework and special projects before they are submitted to me. Please pay attention to our class and school rules. They are very important in helping your child to develop into a disciplined learner. Finally, I anticipate a great parent-teacher relationship. Together, we can help your child to make a smooth and memorable transition from kindergarten to first grade.
